Closet B's Boy - Hundreds of things that you probably didn't know before, and lots of beer


1. My Live Journal name stands for MMH/NTO which is Mono-Methyl Hydrazine/Nitrogen Tetroxide, a common rocket fuel.

2. My birth/given/original last name was Zarobsky.

3. The name is Czech, but I'm also Slovakian, Polish, German, English, & Scottish.

4. I changed it in 1993 in part to distance myself from that side of the family.

5. But also because Knight is easier for people to remember and spell.

6. My college degree still has my original last name.

7. I graduated in 1992 from Purdue with a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering.

8. I received my Professional Engineering license in 1995 in Mechanical Engineering.

9. Now, I work as an Electrical Engineer primarily writing software for embedded controls.

10. I have only ever had 4 different jobs in my life.

11. I don't like to talk about my childhood much.

12. My father was at various times a drug addict, an alcoholic, and an abuser.

13. He died almost 7 years ago. I think the world is a better place.

14. I wrote for the school newspaper in high school.

15. I'm a pretty decent writer, but I don't usually have the desire.

16. I once wrote and presented a professional paper on planetary exploration at an AIAA conference.

17. I played Rugby off and on for several years at Purdue.

18. I enjoyed playing hooker, but I was too tall. I had to settle for prop or flanker.

19. Growing up I was a White Sox fan, but as an adult I'm a huge Cubs fan.

20. I like to watch college basketball more than professional basketball.

21. I like to watch professional football more than college football.

22. This year, I'm going to participate in a fantasy football league for the first time.

23. My blood type is O negative.

24. I am also CMV negative, so my blood donations are given to neo-natal babies.

25. I donate every 8 weeks which is as often as possible.

26. Last year I reached the 3 gallon mark.

27. I have a tattoo of a green star on my right ankle and Calvin (of "and Hobbes" fame) on my left arm.

28. I've thought about getting another one, but I would be deferred from donating blood for 1 year.

29. I think the life of a newborn is more important than my appearance.

30. I am very much pro-choice.

31. I do wish there was a better solution than abortion however.

32. I consider myself a libertarian.

33. I vote in every election, local and state, and federal. Even if it's only for a referendum issue.

34. I was raised a catholic and went to CCD every Saturday.

35. I never made my confirmation and eventually turned to atheism.

36. A couple of years ago I discovered the Unitarian Universalist church. It really struck something inside me.

37. I now go to church almost every week, however I still consider myself agnostic.

38. I celebrate the Winter Solstice every year.

39. I taught myself to program in BASIC in 7th grade on a TRS-80.

40. The first computer I ever owned was a Vic-20.

41. That was followed shortly thereafter by a Commodore 64.

42. In college I bought a Mac Classic and later a PowerPC 8500 which I named "Orac".

43. I'm still a Macintosh user at heart, however I now primarily use Intel-based PCs running Windows.

44. I built my current home PC myself from the ground up. I named it "Halo".

45. I think everyone should name their computers.

46. Over the years I've learned Pascal, Cobol, C, and Assembly.

47. I truly believe that Lint should have never been separated from the original C compiler.

48. I started using the Internet when it was called Arpanet in 1987.

49. The first computer outside of the US I ever connected to was an FTP server in Iceland.

50. Sometimes I'm nostalgic for the old days of text based interfaces.

51. I'm pretty good as using "vi". I wonder how many people reading this even know what "vi" was.

52. I think My So-Called Life is one of the greatest television shows ever.

53. I even produced a MSCL CDROM back in 1993.

54. I was a huge Melrose Place fan during it's first 4 seasons.

55. I created and hosted the Josie Bisset Appreciation Page.

56. I always used to like making mix tapes for myself and friends.

57. Now I make mix CDs (including Gurlswap).

58. My musical tastes are all over the map.

59. My first concert (with my parents) was Sha Na Na in the 70's.

60. My first concert (sans parents) was U2 on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987.

61. I'm more of a "glass is half-full" kind of person.

62. I met my girlfriend, Lisa on Live Journal (She's lawgeekgurl)

63. This was due in large part to a set of collectible Watchmen buttons I bought back in the early 80's.

64. I've never been engaged or married, but the thought has crossed my mind lately.

65. I would like to have kids someday.

66. I love trees. I would like to own a house with a big yard and lots of trees.

67. I would build a tree house.

68. I would also plant hop vines.

69. My favorite hobby is brewing beer.

70. Last year my Tupelo mead took Best of Show at the Chicago Beer Society's Spooky Brew competition.

71. I currently have approximately 50 gallons of beer on hand at home.

72. I would like to own a pub someday. Not a bar, gin mill, tavern, or nightclub, but a pub.

73. I like to bake. I make pretty decent biscotti and cookies.

74. I would like to learn how to bake bread. Especially sourdough.

75. I drink way too much Diet Pepsi every day.

76. My first car was a 1971 Dodge Dart with a 318 V8 bought for $400 back in 1985.

77. Over the next couple of years I replaced well over 75% of the engine by myself.

78. I now drive a 2004 Subaru WRX.

79. My dream car remains a 1969 Dodge Dart GTS with a 440 6-pack. (Or maybe a Hemi Cuda.)

80. I'm interested in magic. The performance kind, not the supernatural kind.

81. I took several magic classes at and eventually joined the Magic Castle in Hollywood.

82. My favorite authors include Willa Cather, Anne Sexton, Umberto Eco, & Albert Camus.

83. One of my favorite books of all time is a little known novel by Norman Spinrad called Russian Spring.

84. Last year I attempted to memorize the entire text to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" in time for Halloween.

85. I managed 5 out of 18 stanzas. I would like to finish the rest.

86. I dressed up as the Cat in the Hat last year for Halloween.

87. This year I want to be a Sandman from Logan's Run. "Run, Runner!!"

88. I don't usually remember my dreams, however, I do have lucid dreams from time to time.

89. I tend to have quite a few dreams about flying or floating.

90. I would like to try hang gliding or para-sailing someday.

91. I cannot eat eggs prepared any way, shape, or form. I find them completely repulsive.

92. I'm not partial to fish very often although I love calamari.

93. My favorite food is pizza with any toppings except anchovies.

94. I firmly believe that genuine Ceaser dressing should be plentiful with the anchovies.

95. I had several pets growing up, including a hermit crab named Ceaser and a dog named Brutus.

96. I don't speak Latin, but I'm pretty decent at German.

97. Once upon a time I was interested in learning Esperanto.

98. I love to travel, especially to Europe.

99. My all-time favorite city to visit is Prague in the Czech Republic.

100. Someday I would like to visit Easter Island.
